Technological innovation and long-term partnerships take center stage at the Belotti Tech Day.
Beyond technology lies the value of relationships. This was the key message that emerged from the event dedicated to the marine industry, which on Wednesday, July 8, brought together numerous representatives from shipyards, composite materials supply chain and manufacturing companies, engineers, and technology partners at the Belotti Innovation HUB in Modena for a day of technical insights, discussion, and networking.
Following the success of previous editions, the initiative once again confirmed its role as a benchmark event for professionals interested in exploring the latest hardware and software technologies for advanced material machining, automation, and the digitalization of manufacturing processes.
Opening the event was Umberto Belotti (CEO of Belotti SpA), who highlighted the company’s commitment to promoting opportunities where customers, partners, and industry professionals can share experiences, expertise, and perspectives on the future of manufacturing. In his opening speech, he also retraced the key milestones that marked Belotti’s entry into the marine sector, recounting the first projects acquired and alternating technical insights with personal anecdotes that conveyed the human and entrepreneurial value of that journey.
More than twenty years of collaboration with marine industry leaders
The Tech Day on July 8 held particular significance thanks to the participation of Persico Group and Cranchi Yachts, two companies that represent Belotti’s first historic references in the marine sector. A collaboration that began more than twenty years ago thanks to the vision of Eng. Luciano Belotti, who recognized well in advance the potential of CNC machining applied to composite materials for boatbuilding.
Starting from the memory of this twenty-year relationship, Marcello Persico (CEO of Persico Marine and Vice President of Persico Group) shared the pioneering journey of Persico Marine in the use of composites in competitive sailing, from Il Moro di Venezia to Luna Rossa, and highlighted Belotti’s role in developing dedicated technological solutions for machining high-performance components.
The same continuity of collaboration has characterized the relationship with Cranchi Yachts, as demonstrated by the speech delivered by CEO Guido Cranchi, who illustrated the evolution of the shipyard’s manufacturing technologies and the new challenges arising from the growing demand for precision, repeatability, and automation in production processes. Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of quality, a core element of the company’s decision-making system and industrial model, fully reflected in the finished yacht.
Confirming Belotti’s ability to build a shared innovation ecosystem, the program also featured Umberto Capelli, CEO of Cantieri Capelli, who retraced the shipyard’s transformation from traditional craftsmanship to the introduction of five-axis CNC machining for the production of boats, rigid inflatable boats, and tenders.
From craftsmanship to industrialization
From the introduction of composite materials to the most advanced production technologies, the marine industry has undergone a profound transformation, making it necessary to transfer the expertise and craftsmanship of traditional manufacturing into repeatable industrial processes without sacrificing the attention to detail and quality that characterize every vessel.
Within this evolution, Belotti technologies have become a key reference for the machining of models and molds, structural and non-structural components, and finished boat parts: from cutting resin models to trimming hulls and decks made of fiberglass and high-performance composite materials.
“Belotti Powered by Moi”: the new hybrid manufacturing technology
Among the most anticipated moments of the day was the official presentation of “Belotti Powered by Moi“, the new hybrid manufacturing platform developed in collaboration with Moi Composites, which integrates the additive deposition process of thermoset matrix composites and high-precision CNC milling within a single production environment.
The solution, presented by Alberto Riganti, Sales Product Manager & Additive Specialist at Belotti SpA, and Gabriele Natale, CEO of Moi Composites, opens new possibilities for the production of molds, models, toolings, and finished parts.
The entire range of Belotti machining centers can integrate the Short Fiber Manufacturing (SFM®) technology developed by Moi Composites, making large-format 3D printing of thermoset composites an integral part of CNC machining operations. Thanks to the high-speed deposition of vinyl ester resin reinforced with 45% glass fiber and in-situ UV polymerization, parts can be milled immediately after printing, which drastically reduces development times, production costs, and intermediate processing steps.
Also available as a retrofit on existing machining centers, the technology extends the capabilities of traditional CNC machining through the integration with additive manufacturing, offering tangible benefits while ensuring high-quality standards throughout the various stages of production processes across sectors such as marine, automotive, aerospace, and design.
Digitalization and quality control: the value of data in shipbuilding
The second part of the agenda focused on digital processes supporting design and manufacturing activities. Roberto Giovara, Sales Area Trimming & Laser at Tebis Italia, demonstrated how modern CAD/CAM solutions enable companies to control and compensate for hull and component deformations before milling operations, improving both accuracy and the quality of the final product.
Subsequently, Roberto Mazzetto, CEO of QFP, explored the applications of 3D Dimensional Check & Reverse Engineering systems, which are becoming increasingly strategic for quality control, dimensional analysis, and the optimization of finished components.
A shared route toward innovation
Through a format that alternated technical presentations, industry testimonials, and direct discussion, the event brought together some of the leading players in the Italian marine industry, creating a unique opportunity for dialogue among shipyards, technology providers, and professionals united by a common vision: enhancing the expertise that distinguishes the marine sector through increasingly advanced tools and manufacturing processes for the machining of composite material components.
The live demos and networking sessions concluded a day that highlighted how technological progress is closely tied to the ability to build strong and long-lasting collaborations among manufacturers, technology providers, and industrial partners.
Our sincere thanks go to the participating partners (Moi Composites, Tebis Italia, QFP), the guest speakers, and all attendees who contributed to the success of this event.
